Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology
Empower communication to transform lives.
Prerequisites include:
- Bachelor’s degree
- 24 hours in approved speech-language pathology courses
- 25 hours of guided clinical observation before enrolling in the program
Our graduate program requires full-time, on-campus enrollment. Students take courses and engage in clinical practicum to fulfill academic and clinical requirements for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in SLP (CCC-SLP).
The curriculum focuses on more complex communication disorders, with students starting coursework and practicum in the first semester. Students should expect to complete a minimum 375 hours of supervised clinical practice, including 325 hours at the graduate level.
Graduate students gain clinical experience both on and off-campus. In the first year, you'll be placed at the Miller Speech & Hearing Clinic. Afterward, two externship experiences are required—one in a pediatric setting and one in an adult setting.
What to Expect
Work on-campus at our Miller Speech & Hearing Clinic with clients having various speech and language disorders, such as:
- Articulation or phonology
- Delayed or impaired language
- Foreign accent reduction
- Children with hearing loss or cochlear implants
- Work with the clinic coordinator to choose the best externship fit.
- Begin your initial externship in the summer under experienced speech-language pathologist spanning eight to nine weeks and encompassing both pediatric and adult settings.
Students working with hearing-impaired children need to have completed an aural rehabilitation course.
- Undertake a second externship during the fall or spring semester.
- Placement in the adult neurological clinic and the voice and fluency specialty clinics at the Miller Speech & Hearing Clinic during the other semester
